Caution: Stepping up on the Soapbox

Okay! I'm fired up!!! This issue has been festering for a while. What is it you ask? It's the issue of the audience side of "Concert Etiquette" . How do you behave at a school band or choir concert? How do you permit your children to behave at a concert?
I've been noticing for the past few years (but it's been the rare person) that people talk while the students are playing/singing. But last night just tipped the scale for me. I have NEVER been at a concert with the most RUDEST people in attendance. I think EVERY "rule" on Concert Etiquette was broken.

The family in front of us ~ the Dad came in late toting a cup of coffee, Mom broke out the snacks (M & M's, Skittles, and a PayDay bar) for the kiddos, reading out loud Where is Waldo, letting one of their children get up and down to go visit a friend DURING the songs, etc., etc., etc. And what was with all the parents waving to their students? I'm serious, this one Grandma was waving the entire time during the first song! Another Dad, that was in the front row was waving at his child during the song. Um, hello, they are not in elementary school anymore people. And if you are the one that dropped them off, they know you are there!

Then there are the crying babies. Don't get me wrong, I haven't forgotten! I can honestly tell you that I took my baby out of the auditorium BEFORE they became an annoyance. When David was little, the sound of the trumpets scared him so out I went into the hall where I could still hear and David relaxed.

Did you know that the audience is as much a part of the performance as the student? Did you know that there are "rules" for attending a concert for the audience? Time for an education! Really they are just common sense and being polite to others around you.
  • Clapping is the appropriate way to show appreciation for the performance rather than whistling or cheering.

  • Please do not hum or clap along with the performers, unless specifically invited to do so.

  • Parents should keep small children seated with them. If children become restless or fussy, please move them to the outer corridor.

  • Enter the auditorium quietly. Once you have been seated, be alert to activity on the stage as the musicians take their place for the concert.

  • When the conductor enters, it is customary to applaud politely. Whistling, yelling, or screaming is not appropriate at any time before, during, or after a concert.

  • Never stand or move around while music is being performed. It distracts listeners around you, as well as the performers. If you must leave for any reason, wait until a piece is finished, and the audience is applauding. Also, return to your seat only between numbers.

  • It is impolite to talk, or even whisper, while the music is being performed. Listeners and performers are also distracted by sounds from programs, candy wrappers, jewelry and other objects. Remain still, and be thoughtful of others by talking or making sounds only between numbers.

  • It is impolite to wear hats or caps during a concert.

  • It is impolite to eat or drink refreshments during a concert.

  • Always say “excuse me,” if you must pass in front of someone while going to or from your seat.

  • Watch the conductor when the music stops to decide whether or not to applaud. Some musical works have several parts or movements and the audience is expected to applaud only after all movements have been performed.

  • Make certain that all pagers and cellphones are turned off prior to the start of any concert.
I felt SO sad for the three choirs that performed last night. And I was only there to make an announcement and presentation to a student.

Officially stepping off the box now!

Oh, the wish!!!

The wish for unlimited amounts of Treadmills! TREADMILLS?!?!?! Yep! You read that correctly. I would so LOVE for our family to do this for a talent show. But not sure I can come up with 8 treadmills. Let alone transport them to the place where we would perform. So until then, enjoy!!

And you know I can't have a post without some eye candy. And this is the sweetest candy in the photo bin right now! Thanks Jessica for this beautiful picture of Elizabeth.

It's Beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Since we were detained last week going to get our tree (because of the rain) we were determined to get it this Saturday!

David (I think he looks a lot like Robert in this picture) was a bit sad that we didn't go out to our usual place, Fullner Tree Farm to cut down our tree. He was so looking forward to helping this year. But since it had been raining pretty hard all morning, we knew that it would be smushy walking around.

So we just went to our local nursery here in Lynden!

Ruby has carried home many a Christmas tree for us.

Once we got it set up we had to let it dry out before we start putting the lights and ornaments on. I'll make sure to show a picture when we're all done. By then it was time to eat some dinner and get ready for Amber's 1st vocal recital.

She did such a good job! This was the first time we've worked with this particular pianist and he was very impressed with the maturity of Amber's voice. It's always nice to get additional input. He was great to work with.

As you can tell it was a busy, but a very good Saturday.

It's been crazy around here!

Thanksgiving was GREAT!! It was full of...
Mom's official potato peelers

A tense chess game
a baby faced girl sporting her new hair cut
a hungry boy wanting to eat

a traditional picture before we eat

an untraditional picture!!!
And trying, I mean really trying to get a family picture....
Josh and I are the ONLY ones being semi-serious here

Opps :D
Eeeewwwwww, can you guess what David did here?

This was the best one we managed.
And even though we weren't with this little one and her Mom I had to show these adorable pictures Jessica took! So beautiful!!!

And we got to talk with her Daddy quite a few times this day. Perfect!!

This made my day!!

It may be a cell phone picture and we have some red eye. But this Grandma (and Grandpa and Auntie Amber and Uncle David) thinks it's just adorable and it made me (US) smile.

We miss this little bunchkin and her Mom & Dad!!

It's Difficult for a Grandma to choose...

...which is her favorite picture of our Elizabeth. So many capture her little personality. Here's just a sampling of our little sweetheart.

You knew music had to be involved somehow, didn't you?!?!

Like we have nothing else to do

Back before Amber's play auditions, she signed up for a few honor bands. We had the San Juan Honor Band just last week. Done! Over! Cross off the list :D Back at the beginning of October she turned in an audition tape for All-Northwest Honor Band ~ a very, extremely difficult honor band to get acceptance. This is the one that Amber had to make the difficult decision ~ try out for the play or hope to get accepted (won't know until mid-December) in the honor band since the performance is on one of the same nights as the play. As you know, she picked the play.

Well, look what this girl has NOW been accepted to do.

Northwest High School Honor Band
January 9-10, 2009
The Northwest High School Honor Bands will feature music performed by approximately 200 of the finest high school musicians from Idaho, Oregon and Washington. These outstanding high school students are recommended for participation in the event by their high school band directors and the concert is a culmination of two days of intense rehearsals with guest clinicians.

This is Amber's first time going to this honor band. But both Robert & Tabitha have attended. And this was Robert's favorite (besides Music in May in Oregon) and he couldn't be MORE excited for her, as are we. Tab, which was your favorite?

It's a challenge to balance play practice, bassoon lessons, and voice lessons. Add homework, early morning Jazz Band and Spirit Band (where she plays the piano), and early morning seminary (Bible study), we have one B-U-S-Y girl.

More than just a day off!

Even though I will admit having a day off is nice. But I'm really missing this man today

That's my Dad :D He's a WWII Veteran and served in the Pacific Theater. And today is a day to honor him and many, many others that have served our country. These men and women fought for America (and many other Veteran's in foreign countries) to enjoy the freedom that so many seem to abuse and take for granted today. Let's not forget the strong women who did this during their leave.

Just to have your new husband leave for 2 years or more. But they did it!! My Mom always threatened me that if I ever did what she and my Dad did, she would hurt me terribly. What did they do? They met on Easter Sunday at church and were married the NEXT SUNDAY!!!!
We have many Veteran's in our family and are SO proud of them. Rob's brother Ken and Phil both served our country. My brother Seth served as well. Jessica's brother, Jacob is currently in Kuwait serving a tour. Her other brother, Eric is an Apache helicopter pilot. We have friends that have served in Iraq and have friends whose son's are currently serving there as well. THANK YOU!!! Your service is appreciated.
This morning I listened to a wonderful program, "One Moment in America" by Jerry Stewart. Today the program was entitled "Protecting America". Our friends, Scot & Terri Graham were interviewed for this moving show. Please take the time to listen. It is very inspiring and non-judgemental. No hidden political agenda's, so to speak. You will be touched forever.

To all our Veteran's ~ again your service is appreciated!! THANK YOU!!

PS - I'm also wondering why President-Elect Obama is acting like and being treated like he IS the President by placing a wreath for a Veteran's Day celebration with news reporters and all. Not yet!! We can only have ONE President at a time! Wait your turn!

Funny, funny boy!!

Last week, on our shopping spree at Bass Clothing out at Birch Bay Square (formerly the Peace Arch Outlet Mall) where Tabitha works, I was really into finding some cute shoes. And I did!! But these were not on my list even if they look so cozy and warm.

While Tabitha & I were talking about these shoes, she said "I tried on a pair of these and it's just not me. I couldn't pull it off." Well, David overheard and replied "So did Joshua have to help you get them off?!?!?"
BAAAAHHHHAAAA!!!
Amber heard us laughing from the other side of store. And we explained to an 11 year old boy, what it meant to "pull it off" when it came to clothes or shoes.

It just made me laugh when I remembered that today.

Now we wait!

Yep! It's coming to a city near us!!!! So today is the last day to get our order in for the "lottery" on event tickets. After the initial shock of the cost and dissappointment that we really couldn't afford to go to the Figure Skating Finals, we picked the Short Track Speed Skating. Woohoo!! Now we wait until December/January-ish to see if our name has been pulled out of the hat (so to speak). We also wanted to go to the Aerial Ski Jumping or that tricksy snowboarding but the thought of driving up the mountain, in February WITH snow and ice was not on our list of "Things to experience" in life. We'll be MUCH, MUCH warmer watching those events at home.
